On 5/25/2020, officers of the Johnson City Police Department arrested Porter B. Grindstaff (128 Sheffield Cir. Gray, TN, 41 years old) and charged him with being a Convicted Felon in Possession of a Handgun.
At approximately 10:00 a.m. officers responded to the Quality Inn at 1900 S. Roan St. in reference to a subject trespassing. Officers spoke with employees at the hotel who advised that a male was sleeping inside a room that was supposed to be vacant. Officers made contact with the male who was identified as Mr. Grindstaff. Grindstaff was found to have an active warrant out of JCPD and was taken into custody. Employees also notified officers of a handgun in the room when they had initially found the male. A search of the room revealed a Hi-Point 9mm handgun under the mattress of the bed. Grindstaff was also found to be a previous convicted felon.
Grindstaff was transported to the Washington County Detention Center where he is being held in lieu of a $10,000 bond. Arraignment is scheduled for 5/26/2020 at 1:30 p.m. in Washington County General Sessions Court.
