CITY OF JOHNSON CITY
JOHNSON CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT
NEWS RELEASE
Prepared By: | MPOII Allan Rutledge | Date: | 12/23/13 | Time: | 11:00 am |
Subject: | DUI Enforcement Patrols | Approved By: | Chief Mark Sirois |
The Johnson City Police Department will be placing additional officers on the streets this New Year’s Day holiday season on the lookout for impaired drivers. These high visibility patrols will be conducted during the next two weekends in partnership with the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”campaign. The Governor’s Highway Safety Office is providing grant overtime funding for Johnson City officers to conduct these DUI enforcement patrols aimed at removing impaired drivers from the road during this busy holiday season. Of the 1,014 people who died in traffic crashes across Tennessee last year, 295 (29%) of them died in crashes involving impaired drivers. The Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office reports that 959 motorists have lost their lives on Tennessee roadways so far in 2013 compared to the 987 traffic deaths reported during this same last year.
The Johnson City Police Department reminds everyone that buzzed driving is drunk driving. Getting behind the wheel after even just one too many drinks can lead to disaster. Although Tennessee’s legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is .08, even a slight alcoholic “buzz” that’s well below legal limits can be unsafe for drivers and lead to their arrest for impaired driving.
Grant is funded by the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office.
