On 10/13/2017, officers of the Johnson City Police Department arrested Jared Shaffer, 18 years of age, of 145 Ridgecrest Rd, Jonesborough, TN and charged him with two counts of Aggravated Burglary, one count of Burglary, Theft over $1000, Theft of vehicle parts under $1000, two counts of Motor Vehicle Theft over $10,000, and Vandalism over $1000.  A 17 year old juvenile male was also arrested and charged with the same offenses.

The investigation began on 10/04/2017, when officers responded to Grindstaff Kia on Bristol Hwy on a report of a vandalism. Employees located the gate to the fence on the east side of the lot was damaged, indicating someone had driven a vehicle off of the lot. After an inventory of the cars on the lot, it was discovered that a 2014 Kia Sorento had been stolen and driven through the fence. This stolen Kia was located by Washington County Sheriff’s Office on 10/10/2017 backed into a parking spot at the rear of the Dollar General Store located at 2276 Gray Station Sulphur Springs Rd.

On 10/12/2017, at approximately 4 am, the suspects burglarized Friendship Hyundai, 3412 N Roan St, Johnson City and stole 2 sets of keys from inside the business. The suspects then stole a 2015 Mercedes C300 from the car lot and fled the area.  A dealer tag was stolen from Buchanan Auto Sales at 4108 N Roan St, Johnson City and placed on the stolen Mercedes.

During daytime hours on 10/12/2017, the two suspects burglarized a home on Sherwood Dr in Johnson City and stole an undetermined amount of gift/credit cards. After breaking into this home, the two traveled to a residence on Marshall Ct and burglarized this home, stealing a Macbook and a safe that contained two firearms and ammunition.

At approximately 9:48pm, officers from the Jonesborough Police Department spotted the stolen vehicle traveling west on W. Jackson Blvd and attempted a traffic stop. The driver fled at a high rate of speed and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended near a residence on Sand Ridge Ct in Washington County when the vehicle crashed and the driver, Jared Shaffer, was taken into custody along with four juvenile passengers.   Officers from the Jonesborough Police Department charged Shaffer with Felony Evading Arrest and three counts of Felony Reckless Endangerment.

The safe, firearms, ammunition, Macbook, and gift/credit cards that were stolen in the two residential burglaries were recovered and returned to the rightful owners. The stolen Mercedes sustained significant damage and will be returned to Friendship Hyundai.  Jared Shaffer and the juvenile suspect were interviewed by Investigators and both confessed to the crimes.  Shaffer was transported to the Washington County Detention Center where he is being held with a total bond amount of $116,000 on the combined charges from Johnson City Police Department and Jonesborough Police Department. He has an arraignment date set for Monday, October16, 2017 at 10:00 am. The juvenile suspect was transported to the Northeast Regional Juvenile Detention Facility and will have a bond hearing at an unspecified date and time in the Johnson City Juvenile Court.
