On January 17, 2017, at approximately 5:17 pm., officers of the Johnson City Police Department responded to a traffic crash with injuries on S. Roan St. near Bonita Dr, in front of Tipton Haynes Historical Site. Upon officers arrival, they found that a 1997 Ford Explorer was traveling north on S. Roan St. and had crossed over the double-yellow line and struck a 2001 Chevrolet 1500 truck head-on, that was traveling south on S. Roan St. The driver of the Chevrolet truck received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. He is identified as Gerald D. Bennett, age 54, 811 E. Maple St., Johnson City, TN. The driver of the Ford Explorer is identified as Sidney W. Swahn, age 68, 2709 S. Roan St., Johnson City, TN. Mr. Swahn received life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. The investigation is being conducted by the Johnson City Police Department Traffic Homicide Unit and is on-going at this time.
