Additional officers from the Johnson City Police Department will be patrolling the streets this Memorial Day weekend (May 27-30) on the lookout for impaired drivers. The goal of this high visibility DUI enforcement is removing these drivers from the roadways during this busy holiday weekend. This extra enforcement will be conducted through a partnership with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office who will provide funding for the project.
The Johnson City Police Department reminds everyone that “buzzed” driving is drunk driving. Getting behind the wheel after only one drink can lead to disaster. Data from the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security shows that eight Tennessee motorists were killed in crashes during the 2015 Memorial Day holiday weekend. None of these occurred in Johnson City. However, the police department arrested three drivers suspected of driving under the influence. This tied the number from the prior year’s holiday weekend. While the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is .08, even a slight alcoholic “buzz” below that limit can be unsafe for drivers and lead to an arrest for impaired driving.
Grant is funded by the Tennessee Highway Safety Office.
